He then graduated with Honors from UNC-CH in 1979, and then from the UNC School of Law in 1982. Charlie has engaged in the general practice of law, with an emphasis on commercial litigation, in Durham since 1982. He is a partner with the firm of Pulley, Watson, King & Lischer.
As a youth, Charlie was an active Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Explorer. He earned his Eagle Scout award with Troop 357 in Raleigh in 1972, and followed that by earning the bronze, silver and gold palms. He served in various positions on the Camp Staff at Camp Durant in Raleigh for seven years, and for one year as Waterfront Director at Camp Reeves in Moore County. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow (Occoneechee Lodge #104) in 1971, and was awarded the Vigil Honor in 1974. He is a Life Member of Occoneechee Lodge. He served as an officer in his Lodge and Chapter, and was also elected to a term as an officer for the former Area 3-A of the Southeast Region. Charlie attended three National Order of the Arrow Conferences (Santa Barbara, California; Oxford, Ohio; and Knoxville, Tennessee), and served on the staff at one of them. He also attended several National Explorer Presidents’ Congress events in Washington, D.C.
Shortly after graduating from law school, he became a volunteer Scouter, serving the Mawat (Durham) District in various roles over the years as Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Explorer Advisor, Committee Member, Chairman of the Friends of Scouting campaign, and currently as head of the Nominating Committee. He has served several terms on the Executive Board of Occoneechee Council, B.S.A. which is located in Raleigh and serves a twelve county area. In 2002, Charlie became a leader with Boy Scout Troop 451 in Durham, serving for a number of years as an Assistant Scoutmaster and merit badge counselor. He has attended the B.S.A.’s National Camp School in Florida, completed a high adventure trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, and has just celebrated his 39th year in Scouting. He continues to collect Scout memorabilia, which he displays when he talks to Scout groups about the time honored tradition of “patch trading” by Scouts.
Charlie has been married to his wife Heidi for 30 years. They have two boys, Si and Sam, both of whom were Boy Scouts, and are now students at UNC-CH.
